Vote for climate-friendly smaller parties and independents this election
By far the best outcome for climate and democracy this election is a Labor minority government with the climate-friendly smaller parties and independents in the balance of power.
The current Labor government and past Coalition governments have both failed to take the basic step of ending the fossil fuel era.1Why? Because our political system has been captured by vested interests. Huge amounts of fossil fuel money flow to both major parties and to disinformation campaigns.
Labor has made good progress on rolling out renewable energy in the face of a well-organised and well-funded campaign of disruption. However, they continue to approve new coal and gas mines. Despite lip-service to the idea we face a climate and ecological emergency, they have not had the courage to take the decisive action that is needed.
The Greens and climate-friendly independents in the Senate have had some success in pushing Labor towards stronger action. Labor minority government in both houses in the next termof government will give us the best chance off still stronger action.
No safe seat
Now that Labor and the Liberals have only just over one third of the vote each, with independents and smaller parties sharing the other third, there is no such thing as a safe seat. Some of the Climate 200 independents won seats that had been considered safe last election.
Watch out for a massive disinformation campaign
The fossil fuel industry is making an all-out effort to prevent climate-friendly smaller parties and independents winning the balance of power in a Labor minority government.
You can keep Dutton out without putting Labor first thanks to preferential voting
In Australia we are fortunate to have preferential voting.(This is completely different to the fist-past the post system in the United States and the United Kingdom.)
IMPORTANT: You can safely vote for the parties and candidates commiting to the strongest action on the climate emergency even if the seat you are voting in ends up as a a contest between the major parties.
Don't worry! Your vote flows through at full value to your seond, third and fourth preference candidates at full value. Voting for the strongest candidates does not help Dutton win as some fear.
